My special aim has been to try to assess what Islam in West Africa book been the result of the impact of Islam, the way it influences African society, and, conversely, the way the African community moulds the Islam it receives. For the first time in a single volume, The History of Islam in Africa presents a detailed historic mapping of the cultural, political, geographic, and religious past of this significant presence on a continent-wide scale. In eastern Africa in places such as Sudan, Quranists are persecuted for their beliefs. The apostate that Sembene is often deemed to be by critics is, in fact, quite a complex writer. Other early notable missionaries include Abdallah ibn Yasinwho started a movement which caused thousands of Berbers to accept Islam.

He also initiated several journals for this purpose, from Research Bulletin of the Centre of Arabic Documentation in his Ibadan period, through the Fontes Historiae Africanae bulletin, to Sudanic Africa: A Journal of Historical Sources, where he published a large number of documents and biographical studies on important Muslim scholars. In the region of the E Sudan, Islamic penetration followed the route of the Nile. Muslim communities have existed in West Africa for over a millennium, pointing to the fact that Islam is a significant part of the African landscape. This book is not an attempt to write a history of West Africa, but to show the way in which Islam spread and moulded the history of the western Sudan.

The review leads, once again, to the problematic question of what it mean s "to be black or African in an Africa where religious loyalties turn out to be more important than ethnic, racial and national loyalties" West Africa: Colonial Times All of these elements are intertwined and affect one another Among the great facts in the history of West Africa prior to the age of European penetration has been the propagation of Islam and the way it has changed African societies.

Other aspects stayed the same, like the beliefs of the pagan people and how they lived. However, the next 20 years saw an increase in the confiscation of African colonies by the Europeans and by the partition of Africa had been consolidated.
